The Division Commander in the Southern Province, Major General Mubarak Muganga has called upon students and staff of the National University of Rwanda (NUR) to preserve security in order to attain development. General Muganga made this call during the meeting on security with NUR students and staff on 18th September 2012 at the NUR Stadium.
The Rector of NUR, Prof. Silas Lwakabamba while officiating the meeting, declared that the meeting on security is worthy holding in the beginning of an academic year. “At the beginning of the academic year, different issues need to be addressed including security. Here there are new comers who have to be informed and those who are not new have to be updated”, said Prof. Lwakabamba.
Speaking to NUR students and staff, Major General Mubarak Muganga focused on why security should be understood as a key to development. He said: “Security is very essential because without it there is no development since it is impossible or difficult to study in an appropriate environment. For this reason you should play a role to preserve security where you are now and where you come from”.
Alphonse Munyantwali, the Governor of the Southern Province who was a guest of honor addressed the issue of social security threats like HIV/AIDS and unplanned pregnancies. “It is shocking to hear that a university student gets pregnant in an unplanned way. Try to abstain from sexual intercourse, if you fail this, at least use condom to protect you against HIV/AIDS and unplanned pregnancies”, stated Governor Munyantwali.
Comments and questions which came in the interaction session turned around insecurity in the Eastern province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Major General Mubarak Muganga reacting on the audience comments stressed that the Government of Rwanda wishes peace to all countries and especially its neighbors. He added that the Rwandan Defense Forces are strong and passionate to make sure that insecurity which is in DRC does not cross to Rwanda.
This meeting was an opportunity to the Governor of the Southern province, Alphonse Munyantwali to commend NUR Management and staff contribution in the development process of the Southern Province particularly the District of Huye. In this regard, Governor Munyantwali pointed out the contribution of NUR through community service and the recent contribution of 711 Million Rwandan Francs to Agaciro Development Fund.
